Food Intolerance & Special Diets. How Can a Nutritional Therapist Help?

Updated: Jan 25

Food sensitivities can come out of the blue and may display in a number of symptoms which can often be hard to identify and hard to manage.

For some individuals there can be a family history of food intolerance, for others it can come out of the blue. A food intolerance can be a very different to a food allergy and often the two can be very confused..

There are many possible reasons why you may be experiencing food sensitivities, including some of the below:

🌿Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to food sensitivities.

🌿Leaky gut syndrome: This is a condition where the lining of the gut becomes more permeable than it should be, allowing food particles to enter the bloodstream and trigger an immune response.

🌿Food additives and preservatives: Many processed foods contain additives and preservatives that can cause food sensitivities in some people.

🌿Antibiotic use: Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut, which can lead to food sensitivities.

🌿Chronic stress: Stress can affect the gut microbiome and contribute to the development of food sensitivities.

🌿Inflammation: Chronic inflammation in the body can lead to food sensitivities.

🌿Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances can affect the immune system and contribute to food sensitivities.

Keeping a diet diary can be helpful here however can also be very time consuming and hard to keep up and often clients find this confusing to work through. Working with exclusion diets or testing can be great options and testing can be a cost effective and quick option. It is worth noting that food sensitivities can take up to 5 days to present in symptoms, which is often where clients find this tricky to establish by themselves.

Many find working with a professional helpful to establish and identify food sensitivities as well as understand how to manage removal and reintroduction of foods as well as keeping your diet nutritionally balanced. Often with support clients may be able to reintroduce foods or understand and be educated on understanding their intolerance levels.

I work with clients on an individual basis to understand their whole picture. Testing is available starting at around £139 with feedback consultation or where a treatment plan is required it is often beneficial to work with one of my packages.

For those having to follow a special diet such as dairy free, gluten free, wheat free or egg free for example can be a daunting process. I offer support to help you establish foods to eat and foods to avoid as well as understand how to keep your diet balanced and nutritionally optimal for you for health and wellbeing.

Often many people are drawn to supermarket alternatives when first diagnosed. This can be not only costly but also many of these products contain undesirable ingredients and additives as well as being high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.

My aim is to help and educate my clients to eat for them, providing food, shopping, meal and recipe support and education and inspiration. Learning how to eat optimally with a food sensitivity or allergy can have far reaching benefits, with many of my clients finding it an invaluable experience and will change the way you eat, shop and ultimately benefit your health!

Please book a free 20 minute discovery call to understand how I can help you.
