A Taste of Edinburgh

A Naturopath’s Guide to Nourishing Food, Culture & Lifestyle

When travelling, it can be so valuable to have a little guidance, especially if you’re someone who is interested in living a more naturopathic lifestyle and supporting your health while away.

Having a few trusted recommendations can make all the difference, helping you to eat well, feel well, and still fully enjoy the experience.

I have been to Edinburgh a number of times and its a city I do love to return to and bring me back to my Scottish roots!

We have stayed in town and also out of the city - this trip we stayed at Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club which is a peaceful spot just outside the city and reachable by bus or taxi.

It was perfect for slowing down and switching off, with relaxed breakfasts, comfortable rooms, beautiful grounds, a fitness centre, pool, sauna and classes. I also enjoyed a gorgeous hot stone massage at the spa — such a lovely way to support the nervous system while away.

The evening meals were delicious and made it easy to feel nourished without overthinking food choices.

Edinburgh a city you can explore on foot, get outdoors and get the step count up with!

One of the things I love most about Edinburgh is how naturally it encourages you to move. It’s a very walkable city (depending on your level of fitness), and exploring on foot is part of the experience.

We spent our days wandering through the city, taking in the history at Edinburgh Castle and Palace of Holyroodhouse, both well worth a visit.

For a slower pace, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was a highlight, especially the herbal medicine exhibition

We also enjoyed longer walks to Dean Village and Stockbridge, including the markets perfect for soaking up the atmosphere and discovering local food.

And if you’re up for a little more of a challenge, don’t miss Arthur's Seat. The views are incredible, but do come prepared with good shoes — it’s a bit of a climb!

Food & Nourishing Finds

Edinburgh has a growing number of places offering fresh, nourishing and flexible food options, which is always a priority for me when travelling.

Some great finds are:

Hendersons - A long-standing vegetarian restaurant with a focus on fresh, whole foods. Many dishes are naturally gluten and dairy free, and it’s a lovely spot if you’re looking for something nourishing and balanced.

Dishoom Edinburgh A popular choice, but for good reason. They are very accommodating with dietary requirements, and you’ll find a number of gluten- and dairy-free options clearly marked on the menu.

Naked BakeryA great find for those looking for refined sugar-free, gluten-free and dairy-free treats — perfect for a coffee stop without compromising your choices.

Seeds for the SoulA fully plant-based café offering a range of gluten-free options, with a focus on nourishing, vibrant dishes that feel both indulgent and supportive.

Considerit ChocolateIf you’re after a treat, they offer a range of vegan (dairy-free) chocolates and desserts, with some gluten-free options too.

At the Stockbridge markets, we enjoyed a delicious chickpea frittata from @planet_kuku and a warming herbal tea from @the_snow ❄️

A standout meal was at @scarpetta_edinburgh very accommodating for gluten and dairy free, and well worth a visit (even the pasta pot sinks in the bathrooms are a fun touch!).

We also had our eye on @makarsmashbar known for its gluten-free options, olive oil mash and even growing their own lion’s mane mushrooms - although it was fully booked when we visited so do bok ahead!

And for something quick and convenient, Marks & Spencer Food are doing a great job with healthier options on the go.

Culture, Curiosity & A Few Hidden Gems

Don’t miss the National Museum of Scotland, honestly one of the best museums I’ve visited along with the Scottish National Gallery.

Also, keep an eye out for the story of Wojtek the Bear — a fascinating and heartwarming piece of history.

I also couldn’t resist visiting Hanover Healthfoods, thought to be one of the oldest health food shops. I picked up some magnesium flakes to soothe tired legs and a little support for energy such a great find if you like to keep your routine going while travelling.
