A Taste of York

A Naturopath’s Guide to The City, Good Food, History & Wellbeing

When travelling, it can be really helpful to have a little guidance — especially if you’re looking to support your health and make nourishing choices while you’re away.

Having a few trusted recommendations can make all the difference, helping you to eat well, feel well, and still fully enjoy the experience.

Journeying back from Edinburgh, we enjoyed a few days in the historic city of York — and it truly is such a beautiful place, full of history, charm and a lovely abundance of amazing eateries.

It’s also a fantastic destination for a weekend or long weekend break, with everything easily explored on foot, allowing you to slow down and really take in the atmosphere.

History, Places to Visit & Explore in York

We spent time walking the historic York City Walls — nearly 2 miles of elevated pathways offering stunning views around the city.

A visit to York Minster is, of course, a must. With over 800 years of history, it’s an incredible building and a real wonder when you consider how it was constructed.

The Treasurer's House is a National Trust Property and a little hidden gem right in the centre, with beautiful gardens and lovely views of the Minster - a peaceful spot to pause.

We also visited Clifford's Tower, which offers another perspective on York’s rich history.

Take a wander through The Shambles and the surrounding streets its full of historic buildings, independent shops and inviting places to stop and eat.

For anyone interested in iridology, it’s worth visiting Iris Galerie a fascinating experience where you can have your iris photographed. The eyes can tell us so much about our health, and it’s a lovely, unique keepsake and would have been great find when I was studying Iridology as learning to photograph the iris was not easy!

We finished our trip at Ye Olde Starre Inne, said to be the oldest pub in York, full of character and history.

We stayed at Hotel Indigo York, which offered boutique-style rooms and a fantastic breakfast selection.

I loved the thoughtful touches, fresh smoothies, fruit compotes, organic peppermint tea, and eggs most mornings. And of course, when in York… a Yorkshire pudding (but these are not gluten and dairy free sadly!)

Food & Nourishing Finds (including Gluten & Dairy Free)

York has a wonderful mix of traditional and modern eateries, and I was really pleased to find it accommodating for gluten and dairy free choices.

Partisan - this is not to be missed and a firm favourite - the menu is creative and very accommodating. We enjoyed a delicious brunch of Persian eggs and shakshuka, which was the perfect start to the day.

Bettys Tea Rooms A well-known York institution and definitely worth a visit for the experience.

Yemen Heaven - we shared a mezze board and enjoyed a slow-cooked lamb and fenugreek stew with fragrant rice. A beautifully warming and nourishing meal and much of the menu if gluten free and dairy free too.

Also look out for:

The Orchid VeganA fully plant-based café with a focus on fresh, nourishing dishes. Many options are naturally gluten free, and it’s a great spot if you’re looking for something lighter and balanced.

Remedy Coffee ShopA lovely café offering smoothies, lighter meals and a range of gluten-free and dairy-free options — ideal for a relaxed coffee stop or quick bite.

Goji Vegetarian CaféA long-standing vegetarian café serving wholesome, home-cooked food with plenty of gluten-free choices — perfect if you’re after something simple and nourishing.

El PianoA fully vegan restaurant with a strong focus on organic, wholefood ingredients. They cater well for gluten-free diets and offer a more mindful, nourishing dining experience.
