Looking to refuel with Real & HEALTHY FOOD options on your UK road trip or travel? I have put together my top favourite UK service stops, farm shops, real food finds for when your on the road!
Whether you're heading away for a weekend break, enjoying a UK holiday, travelling for work, visiting family, or simply spend a lot of time on the road, finding healthy, nourishing food isn't always easy.
It can often feel like the moment you join the motorway your choices become limited to fast food, sugary snacks and ultra-processed convenience foods.
But thankfully, it doesn't have to be that way.
Over the years I've discovered some incredible farm shops, cafés and motorway stops that are going the extra mile to serve real food, fresh local produce, homemade meals, artisan treats and wholesome options that leave you feeling energised rather than sluggish.
I hope this guide gives you plenty of inspiration for your next journey and helps you discover some hidden gems you may never have known existed.
Whether you're planning your next staycation, driving across the country for work, taking the children away for the weekend or simply looking for a better place to stop on a long journey, I hope you'll find somewhere new to try.

One of the things I love most about travelling is discovering these independent businesses that champion local farmers, seasonal produce and homemade food. Not only are you often eating better, but you're also supporting wonderful local communities and producers along the way and that's something worth celebrating.

My Favourite Healthy Road Trip Stops
🍓 Strawberry Fields – Buckfastleigh, Devon
One of my absolute favourites. Fresh local produce, homemade hot and cold meals, bakery treats, beautiful salads and an incredible range of chilled and frozen homemade meals.
Top Tip: Take a cool bag with frozen ice blocks. Before arriving at your destination, pick up one of their delicious homemade meals and pop it into your accommodation's fridge or freezer. After a long journey you'll have a nourishing dinner ready to heat, without having to search for a supermarket or order a takeaway.
🍓 Strawberry Fields – Lifton (Devon/Cornwall Border)
Another fantastic stop offering fresh local food, healthy snacks, bakery items and plenty of delicious options to enjoy on the move.
🥬 Ben's Farm Shop & Organic Café – Totnes
Organic fruit and vegetables, wholefood groceries, butchery, bakery, healthy snacks and a lovely café.
🐖 Hog & Hedge – Whiddon Down
A brilliant independent stop just off the A30 serving homemade breakfasts, lunches, soups, fresh bakes and excellent coffee.
🥕 Gloucester Services
Quite unlike any motorway services you'll usually find. Gloucester Services has become famous for supporting local farmers and producers, with an excellent farm shop and freshly prepared meals.
🌿 Tebay Services
Often considered the gold standard of motorway services. Homemade food, local produce, a wonderful farm shop and beautiful surroundings make this somewhere I genuinely look forward to stopping.
🌾 Darts Farm – Exeter
A food lover's paradise with artisan producers, cafés, butchers, fishmongers, fresh fruit and vegetables, gifts and plenty of inspiration.
🌼 Jolly Nice Farmshop – Stroud
A wonderful independent farm shop offering locally sourced produce, healthy café meals, organic options and one of the friendliest atmospheres you'll find on the road.
🚜 Clarskson's Farm & The Farmer's Dog
A fantastic addition for anyone looking for real food while travelling, with locally sourced produce and hearty homemade meals. However these spots get very busy and have big queues! so you may prefer a day out here as opposed to a quick stop off!!
🌱 Daylesford Organic Farm Shop – Cotswolds
Beautiful organic produce, seasonal ingredients, an excellent café and lots of inspiration for healthy eating.
🌻 Cobbs Farm Shops
Several locations across southern England offering cafés, farm shops and fresh local produce.
🥩 Welbeck Farm Shop – Nottinghamshire
Award-winning local food, artisan bakery, fresh produce and delicious café meals.
🚜 Fordhall Organic Farm Shop – Shropshire
England's first community-owned organic farm with fantastic organic produce and a lovely café.
🧀 Chatsworth Farm Shop – Derbyshire
Estate-produced food alongside carefully selected local suppliers, perfect for stocking up during your journey.
🍎 Macknade Food Hall – Kent
One of Britain's oldest farm shops, offering artisan foods, fresh produce, healthy pantry staples and an excellent café.

Look Out for M&S & Waitrose Services
These are often found in motorway service stations and although they may not carry a huge range there is often something on offer! Not every journey passes one of these wonderful independent farm shops—and that's absolutely okay.
If you're stopping at a motorway service station, I often recommend looking out for:
🛒 Things to look out for
Many motorway services now have an M&S Food, and they can be a brilliant option for picking up:
Fresh salads
Fruit pots
Sushi
Boiled eggs
Smoked salmon
Cooked chicken
Yoghurt
Hummus
Vegetable crudités
Nuts and seeds
Higher-protein snacks
With a little planning, it's often possible to put together a much more nourishing meal than relying on traditional fast-food outlets.
Pack Your Own Healthy Road Trip Picnic
Whilst I absolutely love discovering wonderful farm shops and cafés, sometimes packing your own food can be just as enjoyable and much kinder to your budget too!
One of my favourite travel essentials is a good quality insulated food flask. They're fantastic for keeping food hot or cold for several hours and come in different sizes depending on your needs.
Perfect for:
Homemade soup
Chilli
Curry
Stews
Pasta dishes
Rice bowls
Quinoa salads
Overnight oats
Chia pudding
Greek yoghurt and fruit
Having a nourishing meal ready to enjoy means you're not relying on whatever happens to be available when hunger strikes. My go to one is Thermos Food Flask and they come in two sizes

Healthy Snacks to Pack
A little preparation before you leave can save money, reduce stress and help you feel your best throughout your journey.
Some of my favourite travel snacks include:
Homemade banana bread (reduced sugar)
Healthy breakfast muffins
Homemade oat bars or flapjacks
Mixed nuts
Mixed seeds
Homemade trail mix
Apples
Pears
Berries
Satsumas
Grapes
Carrot sticks
Cucumber sticks
Pepper sticks
Cherry tomatoes
Sugar snap peas
Boiled eggs
Oatcakes
Nut butter
Houmous
Cheese (if tolerated)
Olives
Homemade wraps
Leftover frittata
Rice cakes
Plain popcorn
Dark chocolate (a few squares!)
Protein balls
Don't Forget Your Drinks
I always travel with a reusable water bottle and a flask.
Some of my favourites include:
Filtered water
Herbal teas such as peppermint, ginger, chamomile or rooibos
Lemon water
Coconut water for natural electrolytes (particularly in warmer weather)
Electrolyte drinks if travelling in hot weather or after long walks

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
Travelling well doesn't have to mean spending a fortune or relying on fast food.
A little planning before you leave can help support your:
Energy
Digestion
Blood sugar balance
Hydration
Mood
Concentration
Sometimes the healthiest choice is simply the one you've packed yourself.
As a Naturopath, Nutritional Therapist and Functional Medicine Practitioner, I always encourage people to focus on simple, sustainable habits rather than perfection. Choosing a better place to stop, packing a cool bag or preparing a few healthy snacks before you leave can make a huge difference to how you feel throughout your journey.
Safe travels and happy eating!
