Turmeric, Ginger & Lemon: A Simple Anti-Inflammatory Drink with Powerful Benefits

Turmeric and ginger have long been used in traditional medicine systems to support inflammation, digestion, immunity and circulation. When combined thoughtfully—and prepared in a way that supports absorption—they can become a simple, nourishing daily ritual that fits easily into real life.
This turmeric and ginger drink (or concentrated shot) is one I often recommend because it’s flexible, affordable, and evidence-informed, while still gentle enough for many people when used appropriately.

Why Turmeric and Ginger Work So Well Together
Turmeric contains the active compound curcumin, which has been widely researched for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Ginger complements turmeric beautifully, offering digestive support, circulation benefits, and additional anti-inflammatory effects.
Clinical research suggests that a 5:2 ratio of turmeric to ginger may provide optimal anti-inflammatory support, making this pairing both effective and balanced.
That said, turmeric on its own is poorly absorbed—which brings us to some important additions.

The Importance of Black Pepper and Fat for Absorption
Curcumin is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb.Adding black pepper, which contains piperine, can increase curcumin absorption by up to 2000%—a significant difference.
Curcumin is also fat-soluble, meaning it needs fat to be properly absorbed and utilised. If you’re enjoying this as a warm drink, adding just the tip of a teaspoon of coconut oil at the end can make it far more effective.
These small details turn a nice-tasting drink into something genuinely therapeutic.

Lemon, Fibre & Blood Sugar Balance
I use three whole lemons in my recipe, blended with ½ litre of water.
Rather than straining, I often keep the pulp. This provides:
Extra fibre to support digestion
Gentler blood sugar balance
A more nourishing, whole-food approach
That said, straining is absolutely fine if preferred—especially for those with sensitive digestion.
Using Turmeric Powder Instead of Fresh Root
Fresh turmeric isn’t always easy to find, and a good-quality turmeric powder can be a useful alternative.
If using powder:
Use 1 teaspoon of good-quality turmeric powder
For every ~2 inches of fresh ginger
Choose a product with a good curcuminoid content for therapeutic benefit
Always combine with black pepper and a source of fat.
Optional Addition: Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper can be a helpful optional addition for some people.
Potential benefits include:
Supporting circulation
Providing a gentle warming effect to digestion
Traditionally used to support healthy blood flow
Only a pinch is needed. More is not better.
⚠️ Cayenne is not suitable for everyone, particularly if you experience:
Gastritis or active reflux
Stomach ulcers
Significant digestive sensitivity
As always, individual tolerance matters.

How to Use It Day-to-Day
One of the reasons I love this recipe is how easy it is to prepare ahead:
Blend or juice your ingredients
Freeze into individual portions
When needed, pour over hot (not boiling) water
This makes it practical, consistent, and easy to maintain as part of a daily routine.
Is This Suitable for Everyone?
While this drink can be supportive for many people, it may not be appropriate for all health pictures.
You may need to avoid or modify this if you:
Are on blood-thinning medication
Have gallbladder issues
Have active reflux, gastritis, or ulcers
Are pregnant
Have a condition where high-dose turmeric is not advised
This is where personalised nutrition really matters.
A Naturopathic Perspective
As a naturopath and nutritional therapist, I always encourage food-based support that works with your body, your digestion, and your current health status—not against it.
Simple daily habits like this can be incredibly powerful when:
Used consistently
Tailored to the individual
Integrated into a wider, supportive plan
If you’re unsure whether this drink is right for you, or you’d like guidance tailored to your own health goals, personalised support can make all the difference.
